Merchant Dies Suddenly

Herald of Dec. 29, 1899

From Dec. 29, 1949 Edition

The death of John T. Shirley, 71, former merchant in Martinsburg, was reported. His death occurred suddenly the previous Friday while he was attending a meeting of the board of directors of the Tussey Mt. Mining and Smelting Co., in Huntingdon. He was the father-in-law of the late Blanche Klepser Shirley of Martinsburg.

“John Jasper” in his jottings from Roaring Spring said, “old Santa remembered us kindly, for which we are grateful. We conclude, the old man thought we smoked, as he left us a cigar 8 inches long and between 3 and 4 inches in circumference. We have it on the shelf, and if some of our smoking friends drop in we will give them a try at it.”

The post office at New Enterprise was moved into a new building recently built for that purpose.

The Roaring Spring Firemen, in full uniform, paraded on Christmas with their new hose cart.
