Learning About Elections

The main lesson learned throughout Christina Brown's third-grade unit, "Every Vote Counts" is that only six out of ten Americans exercise their right to vote.

The theme was to host a schoolwide election for the 2024 Presidential election, and each student in grades K-6 exercised their right to vote.

According to Brown, the unit gives students an idea of the voting process to increase their likelihood of voting later.

Equipped with glue, stars, and markers, the class created patriotic tablecloths, voting stations, and a ballot box.

To mimic the real voting experience, the election leaders, also known as the third graders, were split into six stations: greeters, sign-in, ballots, voting stations, ballot boxes, and voting stickers.

Michaila Wolfe's fifth-grade classroom was named the "Counting Headquarters."

They wore decorated food service hats which were labeled with their jobs.

The third graders guided each grade level to vote. The votes were then boxed and securely taken to the Counting Headquarters.

The election results were as follows: Jill Stein received one vote, Chase Oliver received two votes, Kamala Harris received 34 votes, and Donald Trump received 203 votes.
