Doris Elaine Reighard, 70, of Martinsburg, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 31, 2024, at Homewood at Martinsburg.
She was born Dec. 15, 1953, daughter of the late George R. and Sara E. (Hagerty) Reighard.
Surviving are close friends, Amy B. Bean (Rick) of Duncansville and Susan M. Greenleaf (Tom) of Martinsburg, as well as numerous church friends and family.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Dale; and a sister, Susan.
Doris was a 1971 graduate of Central High School. Her first job following school was as a typist at Young, Oakes, Brown & Company, an accounting firm in Altoona. In 1974, she began a career in banking at Investment Savings & Loan, Altoona, where she first was a teller before moving on to the positions of assistant online coordinator, online coordinator and finally corporate secretary to the board of directors.
In 1993, she left Investment and decided to fulfill a lifelong desire of additional schooling. She enrolled in Altoona School of Commerce in the legal secretarial science program and graduated in June 1995 with an associate degree.
In 1995, she started as transcriptionist for the law office of A. Thomas Farrell in Altoona, and transcribed dictation by machine and by shorthand for up to three attorneys for over 11 years.
In April 2006, her parents required her assistance, so Doris pursued a second shift position in order to be available for their needs. She spent a brief period as a phone operator for an answering service, but didn't like it, so she moved on to the Shirley's Cookie Company in Claysburg as a production worker. She enjoyed working second shift and stayed there until her retirement on February 15, 2015.
Doris was a member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, serving over the years as a deacon, chair of deacons, on the leadership team, as the alternative contact for the prayer chain, and led the prayer breakfast group until it dissolved in 2021. She also prepared and sent out cards to those on the prayer chain, as well as sympathy, anniversary and birthday cards to church members, friends and family, and considered this her personal ministry. Doris also enjoyed attending St. John's UCC, Martinsburg, and loved spending time in fellowship with her other church family. In her spare time, Doris enjoyed watching John Wayne westerns, Patrick Swayze movies and musicals. She also loved to put jigsaw puzzles together and playing board games.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be given to Memorial COB Deacons Assistance Fund.
