The Central Lady Scarlet Dragons had an outstanding regular season, playing a very difficult schedule finishing the regular season with an 11-4-1 record with some great games against Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference champs Bedford and Bishop Guilfoyle Academy. The Dragons, however, dropped a disappointing 1-0 game against Juniata in the 2A District 6 quarterfinal playoff game.
Central coach Randy Trexler said after the game, “We lost 0-1, Juniata caught us in the third minute of the game on a breakaway score. We outshot and outposessed them the rest of the game but missed scoring on every opportunity.” Luck was not with the Central Dragons as they hit the crossbar twice and came very close on several scoring opportunities but never could get the ball in the back of the net . Central had 10 shots on goal compared to 5 for the Indians. The Lady dragons also controlled time of possession and forced Juniata goalkeeper Reagan Burd into making some very difficult saves from close range shots, denying them a chance to get on the scoreboard.
Juniata scored in the third minute when defender Mylee Landis sent a 50 yard pass to Regan Lowrey and she put the ball in the right corner of the net past Central goalie Kailyn Gahagan . Gahagan saved the other four shots on goal.
Dragon senior Paiton Campbell put the heat on with two shots ringing off the crossbar, and Kira Trexler firing a bullet on goal which Burd got a hand on to keep it out of the net. Central’s Leya Hazenstab took a rocket shot to the face and Trexler confirmed she did likely sustain a concussion. The Indians had to put together some incredible defensive saves for nearly 77 minutes, but managed to do so and move on to the semifinal game against second seeded Cambria Heights who defeated Central Cambria 3-1.
Trexler still felt the Lady Scarlet Dragons were the strongest team in the league but just could not put it together in their playoff game and got sent home early.
