Cows Contract Hydrophobia

Herald of Nov. 3, 1899

From Nov. 4, 1999 Edition

A dog owned by Peter Empfield of Drab contracted hydrophobia after being bitten by another dog in Clappertown. The Empfield dog became mad and bit Mrs. Empfield on the hand. It also bit three cows. Within several weeks, all three had to be killed. One had been bumping her head against trees, etc., until she had severed one eye from its socket and also one side of her head was bumped away. Mrs. Empfield suffered much pain for a few days but was reported to be getting along nicely.

Elder Stouffer of Greenspring, Cumberland County, was to commence a series of services at Snyder German Baptist Church, New Enterprise.

The most destructive forest fire ever experienced in Bedford County was raging out of control for three days on Wills and Dunnings Mountains. Another fire burned for several days on the western side of Tussey Mountain, but rain extinguished it.
