The Williamsburg Girls’ Volleyball team held their Senior Night festivities before their game with Southern Huntingdon on Thursday evening, September 26. The four seniors honored were: Scotlyn Barroner, Abby James, Samantha England, and Eleanor Brubaker; the team also honored Coach Marina Brubaker who will be handing the reins over to a new coach following the end of the season. Coach Brubaker led the Lady Pirate volleyball team for six seasons.
Scotlyn Barroner
Scotlyn is the daughter of Veronica Barroner of Williamsburg. Following graduation, she plans to attend college and study criminology, go to the police academy, and start a family.
“Just building friendships and a good bond with my teammates,” she said about her favorite moments in high school volleyball.
Barroner’s advice to underclassmen who may wish to join the volleyball team is to just sign up and go to the open gyms.
“You never know what can happen and where this sport can lead you,” she said.
In school, Barroner is involved in volleyball, softball, majorettes, National Honor Society, Student Council, Prom Committee, and Sustainability Club. She attends the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center for emergency services.
Some of Barroner’s favorites include the song “Interstate Love Song” by Stone Temple Pilots, the movie Step Brothers, and the TV show Dexter.
Eleanor Brubaker
Eleanor Brubaker is the daughter of Daren and Marina Brubaker of Williamsburg. Her future plans are to attend Mount Aloysius to study radiology.
“It’s the experience of a lifetime whether you’re good or not – just do it,” she said, as her advice for underclassmen who might want to join the volleyball team.
Brubaker says she will miss the current freshmen players following the end of the season.
In school, she is involved in the National Honor Society, Varsity Quiz Bowl, Health Careers Club, Concert Band, FFA, and Creative Compassions.
Some of her favorites include the song “Man in the Box,” the movie “Back to the Future” and the TV Show Gilmore Girls.
Abby James
Abby James is the daughter of David James and Christy James of Williamsburg. Her future plans are to go to college and obtain a degree in radiologic sciences.
“There isn’t one specific moment,” she said about her favorite moment in high school volleyball. “Lots of favorite memories were created along the way. The main thing I’ll miss is playing volleyball with my friends, no matter if we won or lost we were there to have fun together.”
James advised the underclassmen: “Don’t take yourself too seriously,” she said. “It’s important to work hard and try to improve, but don’t get down on yourself when you can’t.”
Some of her favorites include the song “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw, any Christmas movie, and the TV show Gilmore Girls. Her in-school activities include volleyball, Track and Field, Band, National Honor Society – treasurer, Creative Compassions, Prom Committee, and Careers in Health Club.
Samantha England
Samantha England is the daughter of Bradley and Julie England of Williamsburg. Her future plans are to attend Mount Aloysius to become a physical therapy assistant.
“There’s a lot of fun moments but I think the best is at practice when we can laugh and have fun together,” she said about her favorite moments. “I’ll mostly miss being able to interact daily with all of the girls.”
England advised underclassmen who want to join volleyball: “It’s always good to try new things because you’ll never know if you like something if you have never done it before,” she said. “Being on a team is also one of the most amazing experiences, especially this one.”
Her activities in school include volleyball, cheerleading, FFA, Creative Compassions, National Honor Society, Careers in Health Club, and Prom Committee.
