Title IX Regulations Cause Concern

Superintendent Lisa Murgas talked to Williamsburg Community School Board on the new and updated Title IX regulations at the meeting on Tuesday, September 17.

She talked about regulations that require no discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation and other criteria. Murgas said these regulations were handed down federally and that no policies were written yet regarding the issues that were vocalized by some of the board members.

She told the school board that before any changes occur there must be a meeting with parents to come to an agreement. No further discussions were held on the topic.

The board also updated the bullying/cyberbullying policy, which needs to be done every three years. Murgas said there would be separate Title IX regulations to the policy, but the policy is now on preview until the October meeting.

“It’s been a great start to the new school year,” Elementary Principal Jennifer Metzler said.

She said that teachers have completed beginning benchmark assessments on students.

The PBIS team, which promotes positive behavior, will be kicking off their yearly events with an ice cream party with the football players and cheerleaders.

Secondary Principal Jennifer Frederick praised student Raina Alexander for being part of the Blair County Youth Leadership class for the upcoming school year.

Four FFA students qualified for the National FFA conference in Indianapolis in October. Superintendent Lisa Murgas said the FFA is raising funds to attend the conference and asked the school board for up to $3,000, motion accepted.

Makayla Wolf was hired as the new fifth grade teacher at a stipend of $43,900.

There was an executive meeting held before the Regular Board meeting for school safety and personnel purposes.

Adam Hileman and Dr. Carlee Ranalli were absent from the meeting.
