Misti Fisher Responds to Proposed Policy

The September 12th edition of the Morrisons CoveHerald contained a story covering the Spring Cove School School District’s Committee of the Whole meeting discussion on a new proposed policy for attending meetings via the phone.

The story stated that board member, Misti Fisher attended her first meeting Monday, September 9 since being sworn in as a board member in December.

After the story was published Fisher wanted to give her side of the issue.

Fisher said that she was at all the school board meetings from December to April, “It was sometime in April that I went virtual for health reasons,” she said.

Fisher said that she has medical documentation for her condition which allows her to attend the meetings by phone.

Fisher confirmed that her first meeting in person was at the latest Committee of the the Whole meeting.

“It is okay at a limited amount,“ she said, when asked about the proposed policy. “I don’t think a board member should be on the phone all the time, unless it is for a documented medical reason.”

Fisher said that attending the board meetings virtually should not be used to hide from the public.

“My intent is to be in person as much as I can,” she said. “I want to serve the public and the community.”

Fisher said she has planned but her health condition came as a surprise.

“It is unfortunate,” she said. “I planned to be there and I still plan to be there as much as I can.”

Board member Chuck Gojmerac who sits beside Fisher at the meetings said she had been there through the winter and spring months.

Superintendent Betsy Baker said the board reorganization meeting was held on Dec. 4, 2023.

She confirmed this was the first date Fisher was seated on the Board.

Baker said Fisher then attend all January and February 2024 meetings in-person, and the Committee of the Whole Meeting on March 11,2024.

“Her virtual attendance began with the March 18, 2024, Regular Meeting of the Board and continued through August 2024.,” she said.

Baker said Fisher resumed in-person attendance at the board meetings in September 2024.
