R. Evelyn (Bechtel) Guyer

R. Evelyn (Bechtel) Guyer, 102, of Martinsburg, formerly of Woodbury, passed away Sept. 9, 2024, at Homewood in Martinsburg.

She was born June 9, 1922, in Woodbury, daughter of the late Alvan and Elnora (Baker) Bechtel. On Dec. 21, 1940, she was united in marriage to Chester P. "Ted" Guyer; he preceded her in death on June 2, 2006.

She is survived by a daughter, Joanne Stern (Dale, dec.) of Martinsburg; son, Chester Guyer (Susan) of Ridgefield, Wash .; son, Joel Guyer (Dolly) of Richmond, Va .; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Shanna Stern and siblings, Luverne, Ivan, Ross, Mabel, and Virginia.

Evelyn was a Class of 1939 graduate of Woodbury High School and worked for many years as an egg candler for Agway. She was a devoted homemaker, always keeping her house neat and orderly, while enjoying hosting many family gatherings.

She was a life-long member of the Curryville Church of the Brethren, utilizing her talents as the church pianist for many years.

Evelyn's main hobby was quilting. She kept a full set of quilt frames in her front window, where she quilted quilts for many families in the Cove. She also quilted with various groups of friends over her lifetime, only giving it up when her loss of vision forced her to retire.

A funeral was held Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, at the Homewood at Martinsburg - Bice Memorial Chapel. Pastor Jerry McCuller officiated. Interment was in Dry Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions in Evelyn's name may be made to the Homewood at Martinsburg Benevolent Fund.
