Runaway Cars Hit Train

Herald of Sept. 15, 1899

From Sept. 12, 1974 and Sept. 16, 1999 Editions

A passenger train had just pulled into the Roaring Spring station when the engineer was signaled that runaway cars were coming down the tracks from Ore Hill. The engineer pulled open the throttle for backward action and he and the fireman jumped. By the time the train had started backward the three runaway freight cars had struck the engine. The engineer then sprang after his engine, leaped on it and controlled the train.

Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad magnate, died leaving an estate estimated at around $100 million.

James Little of Loysburg was kicked by a vicious horse while shoeing it and was rendered unconscious for a short time. After a while he resumed work but carried a bruised face and black eye.

The grocery store in the Stover building at Roaring Spring was taken over by J.S. Riddle from Mr. Thompson, who was retiring owing to delicate health.
