Students Do Community Service Projects in Roaring Spring

Students at Bright Beginnings had a mission to do a community service project while having fun.

Bright Beginnings in Roaring Spring, is owned and operated by Stephanie Kensinger, of Martinsburg.

The teachers of Bright Beginnings brainstormed ideas on how to get the students who varied in age from kindergarten to fifth grade involved in the Roaring Spring community.

"We just wanted to show these students how to give back to the community – elementary students can help make the community a better place for those who live here," Kensinger said.

One of the more popular ideas eventually won out.

"Our preschool students in both Preschool-3 and Pre-K 4 use Cherry Street Park regularly, and we all thought it would be a great idea to help that park in some way," Kensinger said.

She said when they visited the park the teachers noticed that the picnic tables needed a new coat of paint to help get rid of the graffiti on them.

"Our students use the picnic tables all the time for class picnics, and for relaxing in the summer," she said.

The children, along with their teachers then decided on a bake sale at the daycare to help raise funds for paint and other supplies.

All of the cookies, brownies, and cupcakes at the bake sale were made by students from Bright Beginnings, where they raised almost $200.

"We are just so thankful for the families in our care that support all the crazy ideas we have sometimes," Kensinger said.

Following the bake sale, students took a Wednesday and went down and painted the picnic tables.

"I would just like to thank the incredible volunteers from Bright Beginnings who donated their time to paint the picnic tables at Cherry Street Park," Roaring Spring Borough Manager Lisa Peel said. "The Borough is so grateful for your generosity in keeping the park maintained for the community to enjoy."
