From Aug. 29, 1974 Edition
The slaughter house of E.B. DeFord, Martinsburg butcher, in the northwest section of town, was destroyed by a fire which started shortly after midnight and was believed to be of incendiary origin. A number of tools and hides were lost in the blaze. The loss was partially covered by insurance.
It was reported that John M. Reynolds of Bedford was preparing to announce his candidacy for Congress to succeed Joseph E. Thropp, Everett iron master.
Preparations were being made for removal of four boilers and two engines from the plant of the Duncansville Nail Factory, once a thriving industry in that locality.
Severe flooding occurred in the Roaring Spring area following a heavy storm. The Rodman mill dam was broken and bridges along the highway were damaged. H.B. Kantner of Altoona had a buggy upset in the flooded stream and barely escaped drowning.
