Recipe Box Offers Homestyle Food and Coffee to Claysburg Area

The Recipe Box is a place to get some coffee and baked goods or have lunch with friends or while on a break from work.

Located in Claysburg, the restaurant is a small family-owned business offering homestyle food while also putting their own twist on classic dishes.

Founded by Lexi Cowher about two years ago in August.

She started it with her aunt, who always wanted to have a restaurant.

When the location at 12845 Dunnings Highway went up for sale, Cowher's aunt thought it was their chance to finally live their dream.

"She asked me if I wanted to join her little restaurant, and I agreed," Cowher said.

They decided on a menu that would include coffee, baked goods, sandwiches, soups, and salads to give area residents something different than the usual pizza that was already in town, she said.

"We wanted to create a place where people could come together, enjoy a meal, and feel like they're part of our family," Cowher said. "Claysburg has always been our home, and we're so proud to contribute to the community in this way."

The menu at Recipe Box features a variety of dishes, all made from scratch using locally sourced ingredients.

"One of my favorite parts of operating a restaurant is planning the menus and seeing what we can make from what is in season," she said.

With September almost being here, Cowher said they are already planning their Fall and Christmas menus.

In addition to their regular menu, Recipes Box offers daily specials and uses seasonal ingredients to inspire new items.

"We love to experiment with new recipes and bring fresh ideas to the table," she said. "Our customers appreciate the variety, and it keeps things exciting for us in the kitchen."

Cowher said their busiest times are during lunch and after work hours.

"It gets pretty busy during lunch - we get a lot of food orders from local businesses," she said.

Cowher said the after work crowd tends to stop for coffee and snacks.

Since starting the business, Cowher enjoys seeing regular customers and seeing new faces as well.

"I have people that come in three or four times a week," she said. "It's easier to pick out new people.
