The Echo of Old Books By Barbara Davis

Ashlyn Greer owns a rare book store called The An Unlikely Story.  She receives boxes of books which she goes through and picks the best.  She also rebinds and repairs older books.  She has a special gift called Psychometry, the ability to discover things by touching inanimate objects.  She feels the emotions of the owners of the books she touches.  These are the echoes of books.

Ashlyn received a box of books from a friend.  As she picked up the last book in the box, she noticed that it had a title, Regretting Belle, and an inscription, “How, Belle? After everything...  how could you do it?” but no author.  There was no copyright or publisher.  It was beautifully bound and in excellent shape but she never received such a mysterious book before.  She opened the book and placed her hands on the pages.  The book had a masculine energy but sharply felt like a broken heart.  Who was Belle?  Ashlyn traced the book to the owner.  His name was Ethan Hillard.  Ashlyn and Ethan find they have a shared interest in literature.  He was cleaning out his father’s old books and paid little attention to the book.  He also had a matching book called Forever, and Other Lies. It was similarly bound and without an author.  Ashley wondered if these were fiction or did Belle and “Hemi” actually existed.  Why were the books so upsetting?

Ethan and Ashlyn become extremely involved in following the clues in the books.  They appeared to be written by two lovers who were torn apart.  Who were they?  Belle and Hemi seemed to be nicknames for the couple.  Could they find out who they were and learn the demise of their relationship? What clues could the books uncover?  Were they still alive?  Could there be a reconciliation?

Ashlyn has some past heartaches of her own.  As a child, she spent hours at An Unlikely Story to avoid the problems of her own life.  Ashlyn learns to face her past and open up to the possibility of a future without the scars.
