Good Roads Advocates Meet

Herald of July 11, 1924

The Morrisons Cove Good Roads Association was organized at a meeting in Williamsburg. The purpose of the capacity gathering was to launch a movement to have the state take over Piney Creek highway and build it as a connecting link between the William Penn and Lincoln Highways.

The Fourth of July celebration at the Memorial Park in Martinsburg included speeches by Judge Albert W. Johnson and Congressman J. Banks Kurtz. The addresses covered the unsurpassed growth of the country and the recent attempts to amend the constitution. A ball game followed, along with a potato race, peanut scramble, and a tug of war.

A $25,000 road project was undertaken by the state to rebuild the Gaysport Road. The decision was made when the Blair County Commissioners donated 400 feet of county road to the Gaysport route in order that the road would be long enough to qualify for state appropriated funding.
