A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen

As one of the most anticipated romantasy books of 2024, Danielle L Jensen’s A Fate Inked in Blood did not disappoint!

It is foretold that a Shield Maiden will unite Skaland under the one who controls her fate. Enter Freya.

Freya is in an unwanted marriage to a fisherman, spending her days being a violent Viking’s housewife and dreaming of becoming a warrior. She also has a big secret - she has a drop of the goddess’s blood, which allows her to repel any attack. Suddenly, her circumstances change and not only is she forced to fight for her life, she is pushed into yet another unwelcome marriage.

The Jarl of Halsar believes he is destined to be king and rule over all of Skaland but needs a shield maiden in order to do so. After forcing Freya into marriage, he commands his son, Bjorn, to be her personal protector. Freya’s days go from gutting fish to training to fight and learning to control and use her magic, all while fighting her increasing attraction to Bjorn. What the egotistical Jarl (who projects major cult leader vibes) doesn’t completely prepare himself for is the pushback he will receive from other tribes, as not everyone wants one ruler over Skaland.

Jensen does a great job of sbuilding the world in which the story takes place, which kept my interest and anxious to learn more. She also has well-written characters that, while not always likable, were definitely clear in my mind.

With a forbidden romance, witty back and forths, betrayal, raids and Viking standoffs, this book maintains a great pace.

If you enjoy Norse mythology, strong female main characters and romance, with a little spice, I would suggest A Fate Inked in Blood. With a great background and characters, and cliffhanger ending, you’ll be waiting to read the next book!
