James W. Karcz, Sr.

Martinsburg

James W. Karcz, Sr., 77, of Martinsburg, passed away unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, May 16, 2024, in Altoona.

He was born July 16, 1946 in Gallitzin the son of the late John W. and Cecilia P. (DeCoskey) Karcz. He married Sally L. Weitzel on June 21, 1969, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Gallitzin. She passed away Feb. 13, 2014.

He is survived by two children: James W. Karcz, Jr. and wife Lori in Minnesota and Denise L. Karcz in Oregon; four grandchildren: Alec Karcz, Mariah White, Addison Karcz, Lily White and Lucian White; and four sisters: Barbara A. Lauer of Lakemont, Joan C. Maier (Carl) of Altoona, Teresa J. Karcz of Altoona, and Cecilia L. Bradshaw in South Carolina; his significant other, Donna Ivory of Altoona; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jocelyn M. White and one brother and three sisters.

James retired from Appleton Papers in Roaring Spring with more than 40 years of service.

He served in the United States Army in Vietnam.

He enjoyed fixing things, helping his family, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

A funeral Mass was held Friday, May 24, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Newry by Father Allen Zeth. Interment was be made in St. Patrick’s Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in James’ memory may be given to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
