Roberts Encourages Seniors "Next Steps"

“Life is full of next steps,” Pastor Matt Roberts said to the Class of 2024 during the Baccalaureate services on Sunday, May 19, at the Williamsburg First Methodist Church.

“There’s always fear, worry and anxiety about making that next step forward,” Roberts said, “There’s always going to be new life stages – a new school, a new job; we always doubt our capabilities and we fear the unknown.”

Roberts told the class the story of Moses, who was called by God to lead the Israelites to the promised land, and how God said he wouldn’t lead Moses but he would be led by an angel.

“Moses said to God – there’s no point in moving forward if your presence isn’t with us, your presence defines us,” Roberts said. “Is God’s presence with you?” Roberts challenged the seniors.

“Pretty soon, it’s bills and responsibilities,” Roberts said, while he joked with the class about adulting.

He then challenged the senior class about ways to strengthen their relationship with God – rely on God, practice awareness of God, worship him, and talk with God in prayer.

“God is your presence in the unpredictable sea of life,” Roberts said. “No matter how far you venture aways, it’s up to you to maintain your relationship with God – and no matter where you go, you will always be a Blue Pirate – this is your home – the pride in the crowd – that’s in you.”

Senior members of the class Jayse Snively, RJ Royer, and Kara Lansberry led the crowd with readings from the Bible, and Class of 2024 President Talmadge Gunnett led the class with the Graduate’s Prayer. Pastor Gordie Trimer closed the event with the closing prayer and blessing.
