Farrow Gives Update on Dick Schoolhouse

Michael Farrow of the Blair County Historical Society gave an update on the Dick Schoolhouse that the organization has owned for about 100 years.

He said they are looking to transfer the ownership of the structure located in Taylor Township to an organization or resident in the Cove to maintain and find a use for it much like what was done with Royer Mansion.

Farrow said Taylor Township and Roaring Spring were both asked about taking ownership but both declined.

There has also been no response from the public.

Farrow said they want to build a parking lot for about 10 to 15 cars but would have to ask the owner of the farm next to the property about selling a part of their land to do that.

They decided to do this after a meeting that was held at the Roaring Spring Train Station in 2022 but the ownership of the farm has changed since then according to Farrow.

“We are still open to suggestions — we want to do something but we are at a dead end,” he said.

Farrow said they thought about moving it, but because of the age and the material of the structure, they are afraid it would fall apart.

The structure is also due for a new roof and he said they will need more grants to that.

“The roof is the main thing because it protects the structure,” he said.

Herald Driver Craig Diehl would like to know if anyone in the Cove would be interested in forming a committee to discuss options for this historic treasure! Call 814-502-1591 (leave message).
