The Dragons started their Curve Classic run this year with a match against the Northern Cambria Colts.
A combination of 14 hits, five hit batters and six Northern Cambria errors led to a 14-1 Dragon victory.
Dragon pitcher Mason Sparks threw a no-hitter, though that didn’t stop them from getting baserunner through six hit batsmen and three walks. The Dragons offense really took off in the third and fourth innings, where they scored four and eight runs respectively.
The Dragons continued with a match against the Northern Bedford Panthers. After the Dragons had attained a 7-2 lead after the fourth, the Panthers rallied back in the fifth and sixth to take the lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Hunter Smith walked followed by a single from Griffin Snowberger that loaded the bases.
Britton Marko walked to tie the game, then Troy McNichol had a sacrifice fly which gave the Dragons the lead. Baron Dionis was able to bring home another run on fielder’s choice. This allowed the Dragons to narrowly escape with a 10-8 victory.
In the championship match, the Dragons faced the Altoona Mountain Lions. The Mountain Lions took an early lead in the game that, leading 4-1 after three innings. Another two brought their lead up to 6-1 after the fourth. The Dragons rallied to tie in the fifth with five runs scored, but the Mountain Lions responded with one as well, keeping the lead in their favor.
The Dragons nearly succeeded in tying or taking the lead in the seventh, loading the bases with only one out, but a combination of a strikeout and a groundout to third left the Dragons defeated 7-6.
Returning to regular games in the upcoming week, the Dragons will face the Huntingdon Bearcats, the Philipsburg-Osceola Mountaineers, and the Forest Hills Rangers in the upcoming week.
