The First Day Without You By Melissa Hill
How far would you go to get away from your heartbreak? For Leonie Hayes, the answer is from Dublin to San Francisco. Putting as much distance between herself and her troubles seems like the perfect way to move on from her fiancé Adam.
As she tries to quickly settle into her new life, she discovers a bundle of unread letters buried in the back of a closet in her new apartment. All are addressed to Helena Abbott. When a new letter arrives, Leonie accidentally opens and reads it. She tries to locate the previous tenant, but no one seems to know who used to live there or how to contact them. Leonie’s interest is piqued, and she opens another letter. There is definitely something to these heartfelt letters from Nathan to Helena. Leonie makes it her mission to make sure the letters end up in Helena’s hands.
Leonie meets Alex, her downstairs neighbor, and the two become fast friends. Alex has some romantic mysteries of her own. Neither she nor Leonie opens up to the other very quickly about that particular aspect of life, though Alex is suspicious there is more to Leonie’s story than she is letting on from the beginning. Alex is a reporter, so she agrees to use some of the tools of her trade to try to locate Helena and Nathan. In the process, one of the skeletons of Alex’s closet falls right into her lap. What will she do now that this character from her past has reappeared in her life?
With flashbacks into both women’s lives interspersed with their current search for Helena and Nathan, we begin to peace together why exactly Leonie has run halfway around the world to escape her past. It also explains why she is so adamant about reuniting these two people she has never met; their story is remarkably similar to her own.
Will Leonie and Alex find Helena? Will Alex figure out her own love story? Will Leonie ever be able to move on from her broken heart? This mystery wrapped in a romance will tug at the heartstrings.
