The Dragons faced two tough opponents in the Laurel Highlands Athletic conference in the Tyrone Golden Eagles and the Bishop McCourt Crushers. An astounding defensive effort throughout the week left the Dragons with 46-35 and 48-33 victories respectively.
In the match against the Eagles, who had averaged above 70 points per game up until this point, the Dragon defense severely limited their opponent’s offensive capabilities. After the first quarter, the Dragons led 13-7. Despite the Eagles taking a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter, the Dragons went on a ten-point run for a 23-14 halftime lead. The Dragons held their lead, matching the Eagles’ offense in the fourth with 12 points apiece, for a 46-35 victory. Both Eli Muthler and Hunter Smith scored 17 points in the win, with Smith grabbing a game high 11 rebounds while Muthler nabbed nine.
Against the Crushers, the defensive effort remained the same for the Dragons. After one, the Dragons led by a lone point and an incredibly low scoring, 4-2, second quarter left the halftime score at 12-11 in favor of the Crushers. The game picked up offensively in the third quarter, leaving the game tied at 27 apiece going into the fourth, where the Dragons outscored their opponents 21-6 to pull away with a victory. Muthler led the Dragon offense with 13 points.
At the midway point of the regular season, the Dragons have a respectable 9-2 record. In the upcoming week, they will have a rematch against the Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers and a match against the Huntingdon Bearcats.
