Boy Hit and Killed at Bus Stop

Herald of Jan. 6, 1949

Donald E. Drake, 9, son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Drake of Fredericksburg, died instantly Thursday morning, Jan. 6, while waiting for the school bus. He was struck by a truck; the driver reported to police to swerve because the child’s brothers and sisters were standing at the side of the road.

Two Cove war veterans, schoolmates and close friends in youth, who died in Japan within 10 days of each other, were to be buried at Martinsburg and Woodbury on Sunday, Jan. 9. The services were planned for John Robert Ake of Roaring Spring and Guy A. Clapper, formerly of Waterside but more recently residing at Roaring Spring.

Military services were conducted Jan. 5 at the Hite Brothers Funeral Home, Roaring Spring, for Pfc. Luther Davis. He was a student at Juniata College when he entered the service in 1942. His father Jacob was the station master at Roaring Spring.
