‘The Thursday Murder Club’ by Richard Osman

Never have four retirement community residents been so sneaky, clever, and intimidating. These septuagenarians have a few tricks up their sleeves and aren’t afraid to use them. They’ll use their age to their advantage, even if it means making a young officer think one of them is forgetful and unable to do much for themselves. As it turns out, these pensioners are the exact opposite of that stereotype. They’ve solved many a cold case with their detective skills, with each bringing their own unique set of skills to the investigative table. They also get themselves into many a situation that any of us would find difficult to get back out of.

PC Donna De Freitas is essential to helping the Thursday Murder Club with getting info they need for their current case and as it turns out, they are instrumental in getting her on the team that’s working toward solving the recent murder. A land developer’s been killed and things aren’t what they seem. There are unexpected connections that turn investigators away from the obvious “persons of interest.”

Coopers Chase, the community where the Thursday Murder Club convenes, is not your typical retirement community. Several unlikely members become unexpected friends and in their spare time, they solve unsolved crimes. Will Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim get to the bottom of things before the bodies pile up? This crafty, unorthodox group is a fun bunch to follow in their journeys as they pull others into the investigation, involving family and gathering gossip from the local hairdressers and restaurants.

Now that a murder has happened right in their community, their quiet village is not quite as peaceful. This isn’t their usual cold case. While investigating their first current case, it becomes evident, no one can be trusted, maybe not even the members of the club themselves.

These crime solvers definitely prove that age should never be a barrier to pursuing our passions or making a difference in our communities. Richard Osman challenges stereotypes and demonstrates that age is not an obstacle to one’s intelligence or ability to contribute to society. His characters are witty and lovable and the novel, fun and entertaining.

“The Thursday Murder Club” is soon to be a major motion picture from Steven Spielberg. Other titles in the book series include “The Man Who Died Twice,” “The Bullet That Missed,” and “The Last Devil to Die.”
