Claysburg Community Theatre Presents 'The Sound of Music'

Claysburg Area Community Theatre presented "The Sound of Music" on Nov. 17 and 18 at Claysburg-Kimmel High School.

This classic story follows Maria, who leaves the abbey where she's studying to be a nun to become the governess for Captain Georg von Trapp's seven children. The story that follows is one of love, growth, family, struggles and very real fears in the pre-WWII era.

Director Dan Crist said that he hoped to show the playoff between the Austrians and the Germans, as the audience is usually more focused on the love and family aspects of the show.

"Most of the people who I talk to, when they hear that we are doing The Sound of Music, are very familiar with the songs," Crist said. "Whether they know the storyline is another thing. I think that there are a lot of people who don't know the real storyline that much."

Assistant Director Erin Kelly said that she hopes that those who love the movie were able to experience the theatre version.

Kelly said that Claysburg is such a small town and sometimes it gets overlooked.

"I want people to know that we have a great theatre group and that we can definitely put on a good production," Kelly said.

Typhani Russo, who played Maria in the show, said that she auditioned for this role because ever since she has been doing theatre, she has always been in an ensemble role.

"I have always wanted the opportunity to display my talents and show the world what I have to offer," Russo said. "Maria is a good way to get that across to everyone and to really show them who I am and what I am capable of."

Crist said he thinks it is always good to go out and support the arts.

"I think that supporting our group is one thing, but it is important in many ways to come out and see what the whole show is about," Crist said.

Russo said that she thinks the show is a classic that never gets old. While the movie was significant to the population when it came out, it is an important story for the descendants of that generation as well, according to Russo.

Crist said that they just keep trying to keep the theatre alive in Claysburg.

"Trying to put out a quality program the best that we can do," Crist said. "I will hope people will see the value in that enough."
