Council Voted to Move Bell
Herald of Oct. 25, 1973
Martinsburg Borough Council voted to move the old bell from the attic to a new belfry in front of the borough building. The bell, which used to be in a belfry on top of the building when it was a school, was moved to the attic for safe keeping during World War II, when the belfry was converted into a lookout tower. After the war, the belfry was removed, and the bell remained in storage.
Free chest X-rays were being offered in Martinsburg for people 18 years of age and older and school children with a positive reaction to a tuberculin test or a referral from a physician. The Blair County T.B. and Health Society is sponsoring the testing.
A frost that “finished the petunias but didn’t hurt the marigolds” according to one gardener, hit the Cove. While warmer than usual, foggy mornings have made morning commutes more dangerous than usual.
More than 50 friends turned out to help on the William Royer property to seed the lawn at Royer’s new home. Royer was badly injured the previous week in a work accident near Boston.
