The Central Dragon Golf team’s quest for a state championship came to a close last week at Treasure Lake in Dubois. After capturing the first District 6 championship in school history, the squad met perennial powerhouse Clarion in the regional tournament, with a chance to advance to the state finals. But after 18 holes on the challenging, wooded Silver Course, the Dragons came up short, losing 327-341. Griffin Snowberger led the Dragons, finishing with the low score of 75 in the AA competition. Seniors Zach Oakes and Nick Baum each carded an 82, and Cody Clapper’s 102 finished out the team scoring. Bryte Barnes posted a 117.
The Dragons wrapped up a very successful season under veteran coach Robbie Keith that included an individual champion and runner up team finish at the highly competitive Happy Valley Invitational, an individual Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference champion, a third consecutive first place finish at team sectionals, and a PIAA District 6 championship.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this group of young men,” said Coach Larry Snowberger. “They are the first Central golf team to win a district title, and it was due to their diligence on the golf course the past few years. Unfortunately they fell a little short of taking the whole team to states, but it was a great ride while it lasted.”
In addition to their team’s accomplishments, Griffin Snowberger and Nick Baum will once again represent Central High School at the PIAA individual state championships at Penn State on Oct. 16 and 17.
