WHAT: UPMC is hosting its fifth annual Breast Cancer Walk-In Mammogram Screening Event at multiple locations across the region. Mammograms are an important tool in the early detection of breast cancer. For this event, women age 40 and over, who are eligible through their insurance for a screening mammogram, and who do not already have an upcoming scheduled mammogram, can receive one without an appointment.
If participants have health insurance, it will be billed for this screening. However, those without health insurance are still welcome and encouraged to come for a screening as assistance will be provided to cover the cost.
A physician order is not required, but we do ask that a doctor is designated at the time of the screening to receive and interpret your results. If attendees do not have a doctor, we can help them find one.
There are individual Facebook Events that are live for participants to gain more information from or share with their family and friends who might be interested in attending.

WHY: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in American women. Although breast cancer can occur at any age, the risk increases as you get older. Through early detection, breast cancer can be easier to treat and aid in preventing deaths from the diseases. Regular mammogram screenings are the most reliable way to locate breast cancer early.
UPMC offers 3D mammography, which uses low-energy x-rays to create 3D images of the breasts and locates 20-65 percent more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D alone. This technology is superior for women with dense breasts and reduces callbacks for additional imaging.
