Two-Year-Old Heroically Saved
Herald of Oct. 4, 1973
Heroic efforts by rescue workers and the devotion of a medical team at Nason Hospital were credited with restoring the heart beat of Bryan A. Lear, 2, of Henry’s Trailer Court in Martinsburg. The lad accidentally fell into a cistern on a relative’s property along Route 867 at Scratchtown, between Roaring Spring and Potetown. Jesse A. Helsel Jr. went into the tank at great risk to himself and was able to reach the boy and bring him to the surface. Firemen and ambulance personnel rushed the boy to Nason Hospital where Dr. Robert Bridenbaugh was able to revive the lad after a time.
Neighbors near the new bodyshop operating out of the W. O. Weber and Son garage on South Market street went to Martinsburg Borough Council to complain that the shop was an eyesore, caused noise and presented a safety hazard.
Two attempts were made to steal cattle at the Herbert A. Smith farm in the Bakers Summit area. Both failed, being interrupted each time by neighbors.
