When the Claysburg-Kimmel School District eliminated a music teacher position at the end of last school year, the hope was that no music programs would be affected, however, parents were recently notified that jazz band will no longer be offered due to scheduling conflicts.
According to parents who spoke to the board at its Aug. 9 meeting, Maureen Lightner, who was approved as Music Director at the meeting, sent a letter to parents informing them of the decision to eliminate the program. The decision to eliminate the program appears to have come without board approval with no official action on the matter being taken.
In other action, the board announced that a new safety officer will be hired through Standing Stone with new safety measures implemented over the summer.
The board accepted the resignation of Brian Helsel as athletic director and named Corey Reffner to the position. Helsel is serving as acting superintendent while Mark Loucks is on leave. The board also approved the appointment of Brannon Raptosh as temporary Director of Special Education and Assistant to the Superintendent.
The board was informed that the new concession stand at the athletic complex is under roof and that landscaping work has started.
The board recognized members of FBLA for their success this past year and at Nationals.
In other news from the district, it was announced that there will no longer be reserved seating for varsity football games and refunds will be given to those who have already purchased a reserved seat.
The home varsity football game against West Branch has been moved from Friday, Sept. 8, to Thursday, Sept. 7. Season passes for all sports went on sale Monday, Aug. 14. Tickets can be purchased at the athletic office Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Fridays 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
