Greenfield Approves Solar Ordinance

The Greenfield Township board of supervisors approved a solar electric energy facilities ordinance at their July 5 meeting. The policy outlines regulations for the aconstruction, operation, and decommissioning of commercial scale solar farms within the township’s borders.

Solar projects must also comply with guidelines set forth in the township’s existing subdivision and land development ordinance. Small solar systems that are used for on site consumption, such as at a residence, will not be affected by the new ordinance.

The township has been discussing a solar ordinance since at least 2017, according to board members. They attended an informational session at the PA State Association of Township Supervisors’ annual conference in April where they learned recent information about the topic and were provided with recommendations for implementation.

Supervisors approved the purchase of a 2023 Massey Ferguson tractor from Pro Power Equipment, Mount Pleasant, PA, at a cost of $85,995. In addition, a mid-mount mower will be purchased from U.S. Municipal, Huntingdon, PA, at a cost of $62,374, including upfitting and materials.

The township has been putting aside money to make the tractor purchase possible, board members noted.

The board also agreed to purchase a 2015 equipment trailer at a cost of $5,400 from Metzler Auto, Truck and Trailer, Martinsburg, PA. The trailer will allow township staff to move equipment around in a safer, more efficient manner than current trailers available to the township.

Four new police tasers will be purchased to replace the police department’s aging units. The current model of taser is no longer in production, Chief Ronald Sharkey said. The township will pay $2,254 per year for five years with zero percent interest for the equipment.

Thirty-six tons of junk were collected during the township’s annual cleanup day in April, reported Jordan Oldham, board chair and road foreman.

A burning ban instituted in June was lifted by the board.
