Ask the Williamsburgers

At last week’s Historical Society meeting, I had the opportunity to look through a bicentennial book of 1976 Williamsburg.

Looking back on a lot of the items and people in the book, it really occurred to me that I really don’t know all the “happening” places that we have in our small town — and that’s why this week I’d like to reminisce.

Where was your favorite place to visit, eat or shop growing up in Williamsburg?

Here is what a few residents had to say:

Jeanne Bardell Todd: My pap’s dairy and Crownover’s Market

Bridget Dimond: Hornberger’s Store, and Estep’s Corner Store

Wendy Martin: Rat’s, Shickle’s, Louie’s and the train station

Travis McCall: The Dugout

Linda Lemin: Louie’s Coral Lounge

Bess Mitchell: I love the Big D.

Anna Ickes: The old movie theater

Leigh Baks: I loved going to my Grandma Price’s house. Both she and the house are long gone, but the memories are treasured.

Stan Grove: Shickle’s

Cindy Dell: Annie’s Restaurant - for a cherry coke

Jacqueline England: Rhodes’

Ricky Beck: Carousel Lounge in Williamsburg for milkshakes

Dotty Herd: Annie’s

Judy Clabaugh: The movie theater and Faye’s homemade ice cream store across from the theater

Virginia Kelly: Gilda’s

Rhonda Graham: My Grandma Michelone – loved the food and she liked to go to sales

Ashley Morgan: The Sizzler back when Jake Belardi was cooking.

‘Tis the season for BBQs, cookouts and spending time with the family, enjoying a wonderful meal and fellowship. Every Sunday, my parents Rick and Suzanne make the trek to Altoona to where my sister and I live, and we cook on my new present – the Blackstone. Each week, we try to think of different recipes.

With the Fourth of July just passing, I’ve been inspired to ask, what is your favorite picnic side dish or dessert?

Here is what a few residents had to say:

Richard Gorsuch (my Dad): Potato salad

Lou Ann Grove: Cowboy baked beans

Tammy Detwiler: My mom’s macaroni and cheese, and my sister’s pasta salad

Diana Barroner: Potato salad

Marge Troxell: My husband’s macaroni salad and my niece’s baked beans

Shirley Kurtz-Flaugh: Fresh fruits and vegetables made into salads with a hot dog.

Bridgett Merritts: My mom’s macaroni salad

Patricia Shultz: Blueberry Delight

Zena Saylor: My mom’s baked lima beans

Rebecca Miller: Pasta Salad

Juanita Dishong: Hobo beans

Maureen England: Pasta Salad

Tammy Dilling: Fruit salad and bean salad

Sherry Lollar: Marinated carrots with baby lima beans

I am a sucker for a good buffalo chicken dip at any kind of party.
