Memorial Picnic a Great Success
Herald of July 8, 1948
Morrisons Cove’s annual Memorial Picnic, held in the Park in Martinsburg from Friday to Monday, was termed a “great success” by Park Association President G. Albert Grimes. One of the largest crowds of the weekend watched the Williamsburg Lions Club and the Martinsburg Boosters play a game of “donkey baseball”. Although the score was a 3-3 tie, the crowd believed the donkeys won the fracas.
The Cove Bottling Works had to go into production early Monday morning because of the quantity of soda pop consumed at the picnic. Almost 5,000 bottles slaked the thirst of park visitors.
Milda Ruth Brumbaugh, four year old daughter of Allison and Hazel Imler Brumbaugh, was fatally injured from a fall from an automobile. The little girl was enroute to Camp Harmony, traveling with her parents, and was alone in the back seat. She suffered a fractured skull and died at the Bedford hospital.
