‘The Stepsisters’ By Susan Mallery
Released in 2021, “The Stepsisters” is a story about two stepsisters, Daisy and Sage, who share a half-sister, Cassidy. Set in Los Angeles, California, the story takes you on a journey of reconciliation, bonding and personal growth. Daisy is a nurse who inherited a trust fund from her mother as well as the family home. Sage left California for Europe in her teens and returns after her third failed marriage to try to build a life while dealing with all the issues that come from having a dysfunctional home life. Cassidy is a travel photographer who is back in California to heal after a rather significant accident that left her with several broken bones and months of rehabilitation.
Daisy’s father is ultimately the one who brings them all three back together. He asks Daisy to open her home to Cassidy while she heals which means that Sage will be a frequent visitor to the home. Of the three sisters, Daisy is the odd one out as the story takes off, having been rejected by Sage when her father married Sage’s mother and then again by Cassidy when their father and Cassidy’s mother divorce.
The drama does not stop there. Sage’s and Cassidy’s mother is a textbook narcissist who is, at best, a neglectful parent. She is obsessed with retaining her youth and men and has nothing nice to say to her daughters. She frequently tries to sabotage many relationships throughout the book. Daisy’s estranged husband, and father of her two children, was once engaged to Sage. His cryptic messages and poor communication skills make it difficult to restore the marriage and the family. Cassidy is avoiding her long-time boyfriend because she is afraid of love. With her family history, who wouldn’t be? Sage begins a relationship with her old high school friend/next door neighbor only to sabotage it herself.
By the end of the book, everyone finds a resolution. There are couples or there are singles, but everyone has found happiness. The best outcome is the three sisters have bonded giving Daisy’s children even more family to love them.
