Heather Flaig: Heather Flaig, 44, Williamsburg, Township Secretary
Please describe your family.
Flaig: I have been married for 12 years. My husband, James Flaig III, works as a Counselor Supervisor for the State of Pennsylvania. I have one son, Xander, who is 19. I am also the proud owner of three puggles, Stella, Oliver, and Ivy. Most of my family lives in the Williamsburg area.
What in your background permits you to effectively represent this area?
Flaig: I have always had a drive to help others. In my professional career, I have worked as a CNA with elderly dementia patients and worked for SKILLS for many years with special needs adults. I also have a strong passion for this small town. I lived in Williamsburg from birth until I was 5 years old. I moved to Bellwood for 23 years and returned to Williamsburg 16 years ago and have been here ever since. In the 23 years I was in Bellwood, I visited Williamsburg often to visit with family. This area is very close to my heart.
What are the biggest challenges facing the residents of this area?
Flaig: Having to travel to get services that this area does not offer, having no ambulance service in town, having no local police protection (Catharine Township) and relying on the Pennsylvania State Police which may have a longer response time, being able to access information regarding the township ordinances, permits, and any changes that residents could benefit from knowing.
What do you expect to accomplish in the upcoming term if you are elected?
Flaig: Maintain a fiscally responsible township and making decisions that benefit all residents, even though some of the issues facing our township are tough ones to tackle. I would like to see better communication with our residents, which in my opinion will result in a much healthier relationship between the residents and the township. I would like to address some of the township infrastructure, to ensure that our residents can safely travel on townships roadways. Finally, I would like to look into alternative policing options for the township so our residents can feel comfortable they are living in a safe place.
What is the biggest problem facing this area right now?
Flaig: Catharine Township has several roads that are in need of repair, budget shortfalls, and policing concerns.
How will you help to solve that problem?
Flaig: Responsibly and reasonably address budget shortfalls and make the tough decisions that will benefit all of our residents. I will also continue to look for alternative sources of funding for our area.
Why are you running?
Flaig: As I mentioned above, my heart is very near and dear to this area. I have many great memories as a child and continue to make new ones as an adult. I feel a great responsibility and sense of duty to ensure that this area thrives under my leadership.
