Betty L. Smith, 91, of Martinsburg, formerly of Woodbury, passed away March 24, 2023, at UPMC Altoona Hospital.
She was born May 2, 1931, in Bakers Summit; daughter of the late George H. and Annie (Hoover) Sell. On May 10, 1953, in Roaring Spring, she was united in marriage to Charles L. Smith; together they spent 69 years.
She is survived by her husband, Charles L. Smith; children: Cheryl Pote (Joel), Kenneth L. Smith (Karen), Sharon Friedenberger (Max), and John H. Smith (girlfriend, April) all of Woodbury; grandchildren: Shawn Pote (Katie), Jessica Douglas (Brad), Jodie Case (Matt), Ryan Ritchey, Jenna Smith, and Hailey Smith; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Leslie, Terry, Ty, Hayden, Myah, Tyler, Jordan, and Kylie; three great-great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren, Kristen, Mark, and Tawnya Claypoole; five step-great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Gochnour; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Sell and Anna Mae Rettburg; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Wayne Ritchey; brothers, Daniel, Russell, Wilbert, and Herbert Sell; and sisters, Mary Guyer, A. Marguerite Smith, and A. Louise Claybaugh.
Betty was a class of 1951 graduate of Roaring Spring High School. She was employed as a telephone operator for United Telephone and worked alongside her husband on the family farm for many years. Betty was a member of the Waterside Church of the Brethren where she was a Sunday and Bible School Teacher. She enjoyed gardening, word searches, traveling, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Friends will be received Friday, March 31, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at the Waterside Church of the Brethren. Pastor Eric Poteat will be officiating. Interment will be in Dry Hill Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions in Betty’s name may be given to the Waterside Church of the Brethren.
