The regular March meeting of the Spring Cove School District Board of Directors opened with a special presentation on textbooks and resources for secondary social studies, foreign languages, and Central High School’s environmental science.
The secondary social studies textbooks will be purchased through McGraw-Hill. It will cover traditional history. A number of options were examined thoroughly before a decision was made.
Savvas will be providing foreign language textbooks with a digitally accessible textbook provided to each student. The books will integrate well with Google Classroom and have built in videos and interactive games included. The Savvas textbooks are strong on individual learning. Spanish is the only language covered in the course. The interest in French and Latin has passed by the wayside.
Central High School Principal Stephanie Thompson spoke on initiating the Environmental Science course textbook by McGraw-Hill. This new course is offered only on online format and will focus on discussion, debate, small group work, student research, project based learning, and expose students to careers in other fields.
The board unanimously approved new courses for Spring Cove Middle School including: Digital Media, From Here to There, Sports Science, Books to Build Your Character, History of Sports, Career Exploration, Meteorology, Myths and Folklore, Games through History, Social Foundations, PLTW Magic of Electrons, and Archery. These courses were initiated to give students more choices than just band or chorus formerly offered.
Zachery Wozniak was approved as the varsity track & field coach at a stipend of $3,459.
An additional van driver was approved for the 2022-23 school year.
Cherie Bower was ratified as a life skills support teacher at Spring Cove Middle School at a salary of $49,988.
Jason Guyer was approved as a maintenance worker at the district and James Brumbaugh approved as a full time custodian.
Sarah Sarvey, art teacher, resigned from the district, effective at the end of the 2022-23 school year.
In Buildings and Grounds Committee business, the board agreed on a contract with Gartland Lawn Care to provide lawn care services for the 2022-23 school year at a cost of $11,400. This would include all treatments necessary for all district athletic fields.
The board unanimously approved the purchase of new boilers for Martinsburg Elementary School from Combustion Service & Equipment for the amount of $419,550.
Superintendent Dr. Betsy Baker said the school’s excitement continues to build for the Central High School “Footloose” production scheduled for March 30 through April 1. Tickets are still available online. Baker said, “The Playbill for the production is currently heading to print and includes tremendous support from our community in the form of Playbill advertising.”
The next committee of the whole meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 11, at 7 p.m. at the administration office board room. The next regular board meeting is slated for Monday, April 17, at 7 p.m.
