Girl Dies of Chickenpox

Herald of Dec. 23, 1947

A seven year old Roaring Spring girl became ill with chickenpox and died while her parents were taking her to Mercy Hospital. Deputy Coroner Edgar G. Walls reported that the child, Beverly Ann McNally, died of encephalitis, or brain infection. She had been ill for four days.

A fire swept through the J. Roy Sell home on Ann Street in Martinsburg. The fire apparently started in the ceiling above the kitchen. No one was home at the time of the fire, and the family’s black Scottie dog was found nearly dead in a bedroom and was revived by the fire company.

Three couples in the Cove were celebrating golden wedding anniversaries. James and Eliza (Garver) Smith of Roaring Spring were guests of honor at a dinner for their 50th anniversary at the Eldon Inn in Roaring Spring. Henry and Ophia (Ritchey) Grubb celebrated with an open house, and Samuel and Melissa Jane (Longenecker) enjoyed a turkey dinner at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Roy Teeter.
