Twenty-five years ago on Dec. 15, 1997, I experienced the most unusual doe-day hunt I have ever had. This occurred during the wonderful years of two weeks of buck hunting followed by two or three days of antlerless deer hunting. There were still lots of public-land deer at the time.
I had failed to tag a buck during the two-week season. Though I had seen some deer, none had sported antlers.
On Dec. 15, I had set up in a treestand on my wife’s family’s farm. Though I have never been much for killing does, the farm was experiencing crop losses due to the deer; so I was there to try to tag one. T...
