Bedford State Police have charged a Claysburg woman with multiple counts of cruelty to animals after police said four horses in her care suffered neglect.
Katlyn P. Weyant, 20, is facing felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and torture, along with misdemeanor counts of neglect of animals, and cruelty to animals after police were called to a Kimmel Township home in early October to investigate a report of neglected horses.
According to police, troopers found two horses on the property and that one appeared to have an eye injury from an infection. Police said they asked Weyant to provide recent documentation that the horses and dogs on her property have received veterinary care, but she failed to produce them.
Police said they received complaints that two of the horses were seen running on the road and when a neighbor offered to take them to a veterinarian, he found two other horses locked in a barn that police said had also been neglected and were in “bad health.”
According to police, one of the horses appeared to have suffered a miscarriage due to lack of water. Police said a veterinarian told them that it was “highly possible” that one of the horses would lose its eye. Police said all the horses appeared to be underweight.
Weyant also faces summary charges of not having a license or proof of rabies vaccination for the dogs.
Weyant was arraigned by Bedford Magisterial District Judge Tonya Osman and committed to the Bedford County Jail on $30,000 bail, later modified to 10 percent of $30,000. Online records show she is still incarcerated.
