Claysburg-Kimmel's Future Business Leaders of America Chapter (CK FBLA) has created a community service project for 2022-2023 school year. After hearing that senior citizens in the Claysburg community are struggling with costs of heating oil, food, and medicines, they created "Serving Seniors" with the goals of assessing the needs in the community, giving back to senior citizens, and creating awareness for senior citizens' needs.
This community service project was created by Emma Gill, Erica Norotsky, Launa Musselman, and the Claysburg FBLA chapter. It is a continuation of last year's community service project, "Hunger Heroes."
Serving Seniors first event to kickstart their project was to host a basket bingo night. This event was held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Claysburg-Kimmel Elementary School to provide some entertainment for our local seniors. Those attending over 55 years of age were admitted free of charge. There were 21 rounds of bingo played with basket prizes for each game. Raffle basket tickets and 50/50 tickets provided additional opportunities to win prizes. Some of the prizes included a six-foot Penn State sign and gift cards for restaurants.
With the support of the Claysburg community and local businesses, the event raised $1,150 to help further their project's agenda. This is just the start of the ongoing community service project.
Serving Seniors has distributed $1,500 in heating oil and $500 in gift cards for medicines. They have future plans to distribute more funds (for heat and medicines), Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas fruit baskets, shovel senior citizens driveways, and so much more.
All these events will directly impact the senior citizens in the Claysburg and surrounding communities.
