School District Adopts Title I School-Wide Plan

During its meeting last Tuesday evening, the Williamsburg Community School Board adopted its first Title I school-wide plan. Title I is remediation in reading and math for the elementary school. Superintendent Lisa Murgas said that the school-wide goal was to increase proficiency in math by 10 percent. Murgas said she wanted to get more professional development for teachers in the math field. Adam Hileman made the motion to adopt the Title I plan with Patty Kensinger seconding, motion passed.

In her report, Murgas said it’s been “a great beginning to the school year,” and praised the concessions and the camaraderie of the community for the homecoming game. Murgas also gave kudos to Athletic Director Jeff Detwiler .

Elementary Principal Jennifer Metzler was also excited about the start of the year. Metzler discussed the “Safe to Say” assembly for the 5th and 6th grade students, talking about bullying and what they can do to prevent bullying. Metzler also said that the school is planning another McTeacher Night at the Roaring Spring McDonald’s, the first since the pandemic.

Secondary Principal Jennifer Metzler talked about the creation of her shout-out board for high school students and teachers to “shout-out” when teachers and students are doing a great job or being kind to others. She also noted that English teacher Emily Carper received a $2,500 grant from the Dollar General to be used for purchasing items for the school. Metzler said the Homecoming Dance had approximately 180 students in attendance.

The board approved a contract with Impact Counseling for Mental Health Services. The district cited that UPMC typically services the district but is struggling to find counselors. The contract states a cost of $65 per hour for an estimated 8 hours a week for the district. The services will be covered by a grant received by the district.

The board regretfully accepted the resignation of secondary English teacher Logan McKee. The board commended McKee on his service to the high school students. The district is currently looking for a secondary English teacher.

The board appointed Matthew Karabinos the new sixth grade teacher at a stipend of $44,271.

Malissa Whitaker was appointed as the cross country volunteer and Lois Appleman was appointed as the varsity girls basketball volunteer.

The district also appointed Jerry Palmer as the new varsity boys baseball head coach at a stipend of $2,554.

Bobbie Jo Detwiler was also appointed as a part-time aide for the district.
