Blair Co. Master Gardeners Set Fall Garden Programs

The Master Gardeners of Blair County and Penn State Extension emphasizes: Pruning woody trees and shrubs, bees and beekeeping, IPM and the Spotted Lanternfly in October programs. All programs are scheduled for 6 to 7:15 p.m. at the Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 5th Ave., Altoona. Registration is recommended. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. There is a minimal cost for the first three programs.

Pruning Woody Trees and Shrubs

Monday, Oct 3: Tree pruning can be defined as removing specific parts of a tree or shrub to reach the desired outcome. Knowing when and how to remove these parts can be a challenge. Introduction to Bees and Beekeeping

Monday, Oct 10: This program will inspire and provide information on the importance of honeybees and beekeeping. Even if you don’t aspire to own a hive, and don’t like stinging insects, this talk will educate you and be aimed at beekeeping at all levels, showing some physical props on hives, disease issues, and management practices. Integrated Pest Management

Monday, Oct 17: An Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) comprises many facets of arboriculture/horticulture. Early detection of issues and appropriate actions are two of the critical components. Spotted Lanternfly

Monday, Oct 31: The Spotted Lanternfly is in the Blair County area. Learn how to stop this invader plant hopper and identify the stages of life from egg mass to adult. Hear the most up to date information and research on this invasive pest invading Pennsylvania and surrounding states. Program free to the public.

Each program is open to the public and registration for the programs can be completed online at extension.psu.edu or call (877) 345-0691. A small fee is assessed for the first three programs. Walk-ins will be accepted.
