Mburg Faces Rat Problem

Herald of August 28, 1947

A representative of a rat eradication firm and Paul Zook of the Martinsburg Boosters were visiting farms in the surrounding area to talk to the farmers to see if any were interested in having rats on their farms killed as part of resolving the rat problem in Martinsburg.

Less than an hour after leaving the Blair County Airport, Sam Garner, president of the Martinsburg Rotary Club, and Hubert Hershberger, member of the club and former air force flier, crashed after attempting to land their plane in Boalsburg. The pair were on their way to hear the Rotary International president speak in Coudersport when they encountered bad weather. They decided to stop at a small airport in Boalsburg to check the forecast but during the landing the plane became entangled in trees near the field. The men sustained minor injuries.

The Martinsburg Auto Service, located on South Market Street near the Cross Cove Highway, opened for business. Owners of the garage were Frank F. Nicodemus and Lewis D. Hoover.
