Record Breaking Storm Hits
Herald of July 22, 1897
A record breaking storm hit Martinsburg on Saturday night. Much damage was done. Cellars were flooded, birds were drowned, gardens washed out and trees damaged.
While the floodgates were drawn over the village of Martinsburg on Saturday Evening last, the people of their sister borough (Roaring Spring) were happily enjoying a lovely shower, falling so gently that even the sweet and tender flower was not disturbed, only in laughter over the beautiful shower. What strange things do happen.
It was a great season for bees. The white clover, from which they extract the choicest honey, was the best crop in many years. The swarms were numerous as well.
As a result of being kicked by a horse Jacob Miller, a farmer near East Berlin, Adams county, is dead. Miller kicked the horse and the animal retaliated by kicking the farmer in the stomach.
