The Church of the Brethren took a stand against compulsory military service at its 101st Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida. A resolution adopted at the meeting read in part, “war and preparations for war are sinful and suicidal, contrary to the teachings of Christ.” At the close of the conference, Dr. Calvert N. Ellis, president of Juniata College, was named moderator for the coming year.
