Herald of June 28, 2012

The Cove Relay for Life raised $146,927. Twenty-six teams participated in the 24-hour event.

Martinsburg was busily preparing for the July 4 celebration at Memorial Park. Events included the Little Miss Morrisons Cove Contest, the “Cove’s Got Talent” competition, the Ag Parade, Fireworks, and rides and carnival concessions.

Sandra Showalter of the D. Merl Tipton Post 43 VFW was named District Commander of Pennsylvania VFW District 22. She was a veteran of Desert Storm.

Dr. Murray Smith, Martinsburg dentist, and his wife Sharon announced their retirement from dentistry. Dr. Jonathan Zimmerman of Six Mile Run was taking over the practice.

Dr. Robert Vadella, incoming superintendent of the Spring Cove School District, said instructional programs for students would be a top priority. Vadella said some people saw him as “stubborn,” but he saw himself as “persistent.”
