Members of the Blair County Antique Auto Club attended Martinsburg Borough Council’s monthly meeting to propose the idea of having a car show at the Morrisons Cove Memorial Park. They suggested the show coincide with Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Department’s annual ox roast.
The representatives said they had a car show in Cresson and 145 cars showed up. The event made money for local businesses, according to the auto club.
The council suggested that the club members leave the borough council meeting to attend the park’s meeting that was happening at the same time. The council said it sounded like a good idea.
According to Chuck Gojmerac, executive director of the park, the club has been given permission to use park grounds (the grass area west of Martinsburg Elementary School) on Saturday, July 9, to have a car show during the fire department’s ox roast.
Mayor report
Mayor Richard Brantner Sr. noted that Thursday, May 5, was going to be the National Day of Prayer. A ceremony took place on borough grounds.
The mayor also commended Central High School athletes, as the baseball, softball and volleyball teams all had impressive records. The baseball team was also named the champions of the Curve Classic, which the mayor attended.
Councilmember Chuck Kensinger told the council that the mayor took many photos during the games and posted them on Facebook for athletes and fans to enjoy.
“We are very fortunate to have the mayor that we have,” Councilmember Chuck Kensinger said. “He is creating lasting memories – both in number and in quality – for these athletes to keep and preserve.”
W. Gene Henry Memorial
The council approved the location of the W. Gene Henry Memorial. Four locations were proposed at last month’s meeting. The council voted to place the memorial on the corner of South Walnut Street and Woodlawn Avenue. The motion that passed included the need to have landscaping done in this location.
Insurance policy
The council approved adding a $1 million umbrella insurance policy. This would provide more coverage for liability. This would be in addition to what the borough already has.
“This is just more coverage for liability,” said Borough Manager Richard Brantner Jr. “If the building burns down, it won’t cover that.”
The council agreed that the few hundred dollars more a month would be worth it.
The next borough council meeting will be held on June 6. This meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation from the Emergency Management Agency on the duties and responsibilities of the council. The regular meeting will begin around 7.
