Friends Cove
H. Eugene Koontz, 92, of Friends Cove, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2022.
He was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Bedford. He was the son of the late Dennis E. and Gladys F. (Morgart) Koontz. On March 5, 1950, in Bedford, he married Rosemary (Koozer) Koontz, who preceded him in death April 8, 2002.
He is survived by two children: G. Scott Koontz and wife Barbara, and Susan Koontz Eberhart, both of Bedford; seven grandchildren: Joel, Heather, Elicia, Andrew, Alison, Chelsea, and Kyle; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers: N. Edward Koontz and wife Ann, Richard Koontz and wife Bonnie, and Gary Koontz and wife Cyndie, all of Bedford; numerous nieces and nephews; and significant other Barbara Thomas, of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by two daughters: Karen G. Stoeri and Louann E. Koontz, a brother G.E. Clyde Koontz, and two sisters: Janet Lohr and Betty Koontz.
Gene started his career hauling milk to Queen City Dairy with a milk can truck in 1952 as an independent hauler. In 1962, he attached a bulk tank to his truck, and continued to haul milk forming H. Eugene Koontz Trucking, Inc. in the late 1980s with his signature Mack trucks and bulk tanks.
Gene was an active member and served on many boards at the Bedford Presbyterian Church since the 1950s. He loved family picnics, helping people, and was a very kind and generous person with a great sense of humor. He had five German Shepherd dogs throughout his life, fondly alternating the names Reb and Toby, as well as his current pup, Cassie.
Gene also enjoyed hunting, and was a member of the Antique Car Club, Bedford Moose Lodge #480, and the Bedford Kiwanis Club.
For the past 17 years, he shared his life with Barbara and her family, who dearly loved Gene.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 28, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bedford Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Jack Miller officiating. Burial will be at Bedford Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
