Wilt Wins Nomination

Herald of April 27, 1972

State Rep. W. William Wilt easily defeated his opponent for the Republican nomination to the General Assembly in the primary elections. Also on the Republican side, E.G. “Bud” Shuster upset State Sen. D. Elmer Hawbacker for the congressional seat in the 10 county Ninth District. Hubert H. Humphrey was the clear winner for nomination as president on the Democratic side, and incumbent Richard Nixon was favored by Republicans in the Cove.

The investigation into the Centre County crash of the Showalter plane in October 1971 showed no pre-impact mechanical failure or irregularities with the aircraft. Any evidence that might lead to a cause of the crash was destroyed in the ensuing fire. All four passengers died as a result of crash injuries and burns.

A new cauterizing unit was purchased by Nason Hospital with money from the hospital’s memorial fund. The Bovie Electrosurgical Cauterizer cost approximately $1,800 and was expected to be used daily by surgeons.
